Overview
Pyramid commissioned a series of covers for early-learning workbooks, using elements from inside each book to give young readers a playful preview of its content. Working within an established cover template, I designed the front and back covers using supplied photography and illustrated assets for each title.
Challenge
The primary challenge was creating distinctive covers from a predetermined library of imagery and illustrations while ensuring every title still felt like part of the same collection. The supplied assets varied considerably, so each cover required a different approach.
Approach
I let the subject and personality of each workbook guide the composition, cropping, scaling, masking, and layering the supplied illustrations to make them work within the established format. When needed, I created supporting shapes to connect and ground elements.
I also established a recurring whimsical illustration treatment for the back covers, giving each title an additional moment of personality while helping unify the series.
Outcome
The finished collection balances consistency with enough variation to give each workbook its own playful character and invite young learners into the content.
As a designer who especially enjoys opportunities to work in print, this remains one of my favorite projects. There was something particularly rewarding about creating a physical product designed to make learning engaging and fun for children.
